A. Teplitzky: Oblivion, The Fix
This piece was originally conceived at the cafe in the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where Aidan and I both studied at the time. "Oblivion, The Fix", follows the steps of someone on a night out, beginning cleanly. As the piece progresses (and our lad gets drunker), things start to loosen up, the sound is gradually awash with reverb, reflecting the confused and jumbled perception that he would be feeling 7 shots in.
The point of no return, that last moment where you might remember anything, uses elements of performance art and improvisation. For this, we set certain marks on the floor which would be a particular figure, and depending on where I stomped and staggered, that would be the motif I would play. Add the strobe lighting, and we must say we were impressed with the result.
I imagine we went with 'Oblivion' because the piece ends with our friend blacked out, in the depths of oblivion led by an night of excessive drinking...
I did not consume alcohol during this performance.
